Where to fish on Skye

Essentially anywhere on the Island where the fishings are open to the public at the cost of a ticket.

Salmo Salar - The Leaper

Salmo Salar - The Leaper

Trout fishings are primarily focused on the extensive fishings of the Portree Angling Club in North Skye, particularly the Storr Lochs, but there are also other trout lochs particularly the hill lochs in the shadow of the Trotternish Ridge where an excellent day can be enjoyed.

Fly fishing on the Storr Lochs can be either by boat or bank. Hill Lochs are bank fishing only.

Some of the remoter lochs require a “walk in” where a modest degree of fitness is necessary.

Salmon and Seatrout  fishing will be on the Rivers Hinnisdal, Sligachan or Snizort, depending on which offers the potential for the best sport on the day.

All three rivers carry runs of salmon and seatrout with the best months being July to the end of September. Salmon average 5lbs and seatrout around a pound although there are always exceptions. In 2009 a salmon of 32 lbs was landed and returned and in 2010 a seatrout of 8lbs was taken. The River Snizort also has a good stock of native brown trout which again aveage around the pound mark.

The Hill Lochs average around 2 to the pound although there are exceptions with the odd fish to 2lbs.

The Storr Lochs carry larger fish with 3lb fish being caught regularly and occassionally a fish of 5lbs or thereabouts will be taken. The Mayfly hatch on the Storr Lochs sees it fishing at its best. The hatch usually occurs from early May to the end of June. Fly fishing can be incredibly successful during the Mayfly hatch.

Salmon and seatrout then take our interest as the runs start from early June, rain dependent of course.

Whatever our quarry you are guaranteed a day with a differennce in some outstanding scenery and we will have plenty of opportunity to discuss the folklore of this enchanted Isle- Eilean a Cheo – The Island of Mist.

Just wanted to thank you for an enjoyable day. I liked hearing the history you told me as we walked through to the hidden hill lochs. It was an adventure and the hike in (and out in the thick mist) was a joy.
