Prospects
The 2012 salmon season has just started on the Skye Rivers. The opening day was the 11th February and several salmon kelts were landed and returned on the River Snizort. A “Salmon Kelt” is a fish which entered the river last year, has spawned and is making its way back to the sea and its migration back to the feeding grounds in the North Atlantic.
Although the season has “officially” started the reality is that there are unlikely to be any fresh run 2012 season salmon in the river systems here until at least may at the earliest. As such my own salmon fishing activities, after the opening day ceremony, will be put on hold until May/June.
The good February weather is continuing. February is a well kept secret on Skye, the weather has been beautifully sunny with clear blue skies and overnight crisp frosts. This is often the case here in February. This is in stark contrast to the rest of the UK. As a consequence of our good weather the Skye rivers are very low with there having been next to no rain since the start of February. A welcome break from the rain and constant winds which have been the norm since mid November . Indeed the winter of 2011/2012 has officially been recorded as the wettest for 40 years in Skye.
The trout fishing officially commences on the 15th March on the Hill Lochs of North Skye. I am hopefull that the mild but wet winter to date will, assuming the current sunny weather continues for a spell, see an early start to quality trout fishing in 2012.
If you enjoy the outdoors and if the fishing is quiet then my suggestion is , and its something I do myself, is take a walk in the hills and mountains. The scenery is spectacular, you wont be disappointed !.
My next update will be late March after I have been out trout fishing on the opening day.
